On July 4, 2019, the head of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery of the University Medical Center Freiburg, Professor Stefan Fichtner-Feigl visited the 10th City Clinical Hospital of Minsk. The program of the visit included a scientific and practical workshop on surgery at the clinical base of the 1st Department of Surgical Diseases of the Belarusian State Medical University and a discussion of the cooperation program with the University Medical Center Freiburg.
Professor Fihtner-Feigl, a surgeon with a worldwide reputation, was introduced by Head of the 1st Department of Surgical Diseases, Belarusian State Medical University, Chairman of the Belarusian Association of Surgeons, Gennadiy G.Kondratenko, noting that this meeting is the start of cooperation between universities and specialists in mastering new technologies and sharing experience.
The scientific and practical workshop was attended by both experienced staff of surgical departments, and young doctors of the 10th clinic, as well as trainees of the 1st department of surgical diseases of BSMU. The most topical issues of surgery were discussed, everyone could ask a question. Professor Fichtner-Feigl informed Belarusian colleagues about the features of surgical treatment of acute and chronic pancreatitis, severe forms of pancreatic necrosis and other diseases of the pancreas. After analyzing computed tomography data, he expressed his opinion on the possible treatment tactics for a number of patients.
Professor Fichtner-Feigl noted in his speech that the University Medical Center Freiburg is one of the largest in the world. It consists of 14 specialized clinics, numerous institutes and centers. Outstanding doctors work and teach there. The clinic is one of the three largest in Germany. Professor Fichtner-Feigl has been managing the Department of Abdominal and General Surgery for the last three years, where surgical treatment of patients with malignant tumors of the esophagus, stomach, colon and small intestine, as well as diseases of the liver and pancreas is performed. Innovative diagnostic methods and thorough preoperative preparation allow the surgical treatment of these diseases at the highest level. The department of general and visceral surgery employs 45 doctors and 150 employees of nursing and service personnel. The international team consists of specialists not only from Germany, but also from Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Italy and Austria. In the department, 73% of operations are performed using minimal traumatic intervention.
Professor Fichtner-Feigl visited Belarus for the first time. At the clinic, he noted that there is an excellent team of doctors who are enthusiastic about their work. In the operating room of the 10th City Clinical Hospital of Minsk there are modern equipment and all conditions for the provision of highly skilled surgical care. The head of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the University Medical Center Freiburg emphasized the openness for cooperation and conducting visiting workshops on liver and pancreas surgery, as well as the possibility of interaction with the 1st Department of Surgical Diseases of the Belarusian State Medical University in the form of online consultations, workshops and internships.
Professor Stefan Fichtner-Feigl received gratitude from the head of the 1st Department of Surgical Diseases of the Belarusian State Medical University, Chairman of the Belarusian Association of Surgeons Gennady G.Kondratenko for his active personal contribution to the scientific and practical workshop on surgical pathology of the pancreas and liver.
