The Faculty of General Medicine has always been proud of the achievements of its students, participants and winners of city, republican, international conferences, competitions and contests. Another pleasant occasion is participation of 5th year student Valentin Seleznev in the doubles world cup in xiangqi (Chinese chess)
....Chinese chess xiangqi can not yet compete with the traditional chess in popularity, but this may soon change, at least at our country. Belarus has long been trusted to hold the most prestigious international competitions, paying tribute to the quality of the organization and the level of sportsmen. This year in July Belarus hosted the 32nd European Championships in Xiangqi.
I was lucky to take part in this tournament. By the way, two BSMU students played for the Republic of Belarus at once - a student of the pediatric faculty Kostya Nord played with me. Chess players are said to be reserved, thoughtful. But that time it was not about me. Despite my small experience of the game (only 8 months) and the lack of any achievements before that, I took 18th place in the individual competition. I always liked chess, first traditional, then Chinese, but after this result I wanted to play professionally.
The Belarusian Xiangqi Federation invited me to defend the honor of the Republic of Belarus in the doubles Xiangqi World Cup in its homeland - in the Chinese city of Chengdu.
The doubles world cup is similar to the doubles tennis - chess players play two against two. According to the regulations, the couple are a Chinese and a foreigner, negotiations are prohibited. Xiangqi players say that they have more tactical and dynamic solutions than traditional chess, but such rules add more excitement and make Xiangqi a spectacular kind of intellectual sport.
Xiangqi is very popular in China. The World Cup was covered in the Chinese press, but numerous spectators also came to watch the tournament live. I am very pleased that our flag was always in sight. Belarusians performed better than other foreigners. Among foreign participants there were only two prize places - and both ours. For many, it was quite unexpected, but first of all for me. As a result, my partner and I took the seventh prize place. The couple with the international master Sergey Korchitsky became the fifth. Many have already asked me how it was at the World Cup, what I liked in China. I liked a lot, including, of course, pandas. But most of all, I still liked the flag of my country, raised as the flag of the winners.
