Thanks for your important work! We wish you and your families good health!
The first World Family Doctor Day was declared by the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA) in 2010.
The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) was founded in 1972 by member organizations in 18 countries. WONCA now has 122 Member Organizations in 102 countries with membership of about 500,000 family doctors. WONCA represents and acts as an advocate for its constituent members at an international level where it interacts with world bodies such as the World Health Organization.
The decision to establish World Family Doctor Day was announced on May 19, 2011 at the opening ceremony of the World Conference of Family Doctors in Cancun (Mexico).
World Family Doctor Day has become a day to highlight the role and contribution of family doctors in health care systems around the world. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the central role of family physicians in the delivery of health care for all their patients. It’s also a chance to celebrate the progress being made in family medicine.
The history of Family Medicine as specialty can be traced back to 1864. After serfdom had been abolished in 1861 medical care in many rural regions was provided by zemstva (local elected councils). Zemsky medical doctors provided free medical care and were the prototypes of modern family doctors. In the XIX century more than half a million people died every year from epidemics of smallpox, cholera, measles, typhoid. The outbreaks of infectious diseases resulted in the death rates of around 30-40% of the total mortality in the country. Zemsky doctors were at the forefront of the fight against infections and unsanitary conditions. While treating people, zemsky doctors had to educate them how to prevent diseases. The work of Zemsky doctor was very hard but nevertheless the profession gradually gained popularity. There were 613 zemsky doctors in Russia in 1870, and by 1910 their number increased up to 3,100.
Nowadays according to the world statistics, approximately 80% of all health problems in the developed countries are solved at the stage of general medical practice. Family medicine is the foundation of national health care in many countries. Within the framework of health reforms and strengthening of primary care services in Belarus the specialty “General practitioner” or “Family doctor” appeared in 1992. Nowadays according to the plans voiced by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus all primary health care to the patients will be delivered by general practitioners (family doctors).
And in 2020, as many years ago, general practitioners (family doctors) are at the forefront of the primary healthcare. They receive patients, determine their treatment plans and sometimes make not easy decisions.
The Department of General Medical Practice of the Belarusian State Medical University expresses sincere congratulations to all colleagues on World Family Doctor Day.
