On the first autumn day, the Belarusian State Medical University, according to a tradition that has a 99-year history (so many winters and springs have passed since the time when the country's leading medical university began its work), accepted students, including 1st year students. The annual tradition of celebrating the “Knowledge Day” is accompanied by a festive ceremony for the first-year students “Student of BSMU – 2020”. Taking into account the epidemiological situation, the participants of the ceremony were divided into two streams, which means that it passed twice, because the health of the teaching staff and students is above all.
The festive ceremony was attended by the Acting Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus Dmitry L. Pinevich, Chairman of the Belarusian Trade Union of Health Workers Vyacheslav D. Shilo, the university administration headed by Anatol V. Sikorski, deans of faculties, teachers, as well as relatives and friends of the freshmen.
“Today is one of the most memorable days in your life - you became students of the leading medical university of Belarus. The exciting time of the university admission campaign is left behind, there is a wonderful student life ahead”, said rector of the Belarusian State Medical University Anatol V. Sikorski at the opening the ceremony. “The university doors will be opened for you, and you will be able to master various medical sciences. Practice will also become an integral part of training - you will have interesting and useful classes at the Center of Practical Training and clinical departments of the Belarusian State Medical University, where you will be able to feel like real doctors. 2020 has been a challenging year for medicine. And I want to express my sincere gratitude to our students and faculty who actively participated in the fight against COVID-19 and helped thousands of patients get back on their feet. After all, the main goal of the staff of the Belarusian State Medical University is to teach and treat.
I sincerely congratulate you on this significant event and wish you only good and excellent grades. Good luck, dear freshmen!”
“Being enrolled to the medical university, you proved that you are ready for the new stage of your life. In future you will face new knowledge, victory and disappointment - everything that, in fact, constitutes a person's everyday life”, said the acting Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus in his welcoming speech. “From now on you will become a part of the medical community. Eminent teachers will share knowledge, practical and life experience with you. And you must make every effort to fully master chosen profession, which involves the ability and desire to help people in the most difficult period of their life, when they have health problems. Just like your older comrades did in the fight against coronavirus infection.
Please accept my sincere congratulations on the beginning of new academic year. I wish you great success in your future career. Remember, you are the backbone of our society, social institutions and the state as a whole”.
... A memorable moment of the festive ceremony was, of course, the awarding of certificates of acknowledgement to students from various faculties who distinguished themselves by their professional activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The certificates of acknowledgement of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus were presented by Dmitry L. Pinevich.
The Chairman of the Belarusian Trade Union of Health Workers also said a lot of warm words to the freshmen. Vyacheslav D. Shilo wished the 1st year students professional growth and success on the thorny path to knowledge and then presented a gift certificate.
After the official welcoming part of the ceremony, the future doctors took the oath of a BSMU student, solemnly promising to “direct their knowledge to noble goals, observe the norms of medical ethics and deontology, moral and ethical principles based on the best traditions of mankind, always help people, regardless of the circumstances, be faithful to the spirit of the student fraternity, who are wholeheartedly devoted to their Alma Mater, to take care of the preservation and promotion of the native university traditions”. The pinnacle event of the festive ceremony was the famous “Gaudeamus”.
Then there was the response speech of the freshmen, awarding them a symbolic key from the Land of Knowledge and a student card, the first student bell, the performance of the anthem of the BSMU “Alma Mater”.
...And there was also a bright concert program presented by the participants of the Student Club and creative associations of the university, as well as Minsk city gymnasium № 12.
