Coronavirus infection turned out to be a severe test for everyone: for those who became victims (patients), and for those who are fighting against this insidious disease. Experienced doctors are the forefront of the hardest battle for the lives of patients (even if This may sound pompous) as well as future doctors – students who in a few years, or even earlier, will have to become certified specialists. However, they have already made a decision to take action and help fight COVID-19.
“More than 600 students of the Belarusian State Medical University currently work at the Minsk city health care institutions, providing assistance to people suffering from coronavirus infection”, said the First Vice-Rector of the country's leading medical educational institution, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Irina N. Moroz. “More than 300 additional medical students are ready to help their senior colleagues during this stressful period of increasing incidence of COVID-19”.
According to Irina N. Moroz at the very beginning of the pandemic (during the first wave) approximately 1000 students of the Belarusian State Medical University worked at Minsk city health care institutions. Probably, BSMU students worked at almost every hospital or center of hygiene and epidemiology in Minsk. The students work as junior and paramedical personnel, participate in epidemiological investigations, etc. Thus they apply their professional skills acquired over the course of training at the medical university.
At the same time, students are equal in rights with full-time employees of health care institutions, including when it comes to preferences. They have the same benefits and preferences as doctors who work with patients suffering from coronavirus. The Belarusian State Medical University also looks for ways to support students because they make the future.
“I would like to emphasize that the leadership of the BSMU is constantly in touch with the heads of all health care institutions where our students work. And we are proud of these students whose activities contribute to the preservation of public health.
By the way, at the beginning of this academic year, many of them were awarded with notes of acknowledgement of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. The notes of acknowledgement were presented by the acting Minister of Health Dmitry L. Pinevich. Thank you very much for your support to future doctors, for whom professional duty is above all!”, emphasized the First Vice-Rector of the Belarusian State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Irina N. Moroz.
