On December the first All-Russian Online Student Olympiad in Digital Prosthetic Dentistry was organized by our colleagues from the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia and Omsk State Medical University. Since the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of the Belarusian State Medical University has been maintaining friendly and professional relations with the organizers for many years, our students were also invited to participate in this exciting educational event. The day of the Olympiad, December 5, was not chosen by chance. This is the birthday of the founder of Russian School of Prosthetic Dentistry, doctor of medical sciences, professor Veniamin Kurlyandsky.
More than thirty teams participated in the Olympiad. The Belarusian State Medical University was represented by the following dental students: Nikolai Azarko (5th year), Ilya Dyachuk (5th year) and Mark Zhamoyda (3rd year).
The thematic basis of the Olympiad was the work with Avantis 3D program. Students had to create a virtual 3D copy of the chewing-speech apparatus and then elaborate a prosthetic treatment plan.
The first stage of the work was the construction of image-based 3D model, which, in fact, is a digital prototype of the patient's dentoalveolar system and is created by combining the scans of the tooth alignments, scans of centric, anterior and lateral occlusions, cone-beam computed tomography and facial photography. The created digital prototype allows to perform precise analysis of the morphology and function of the dentoalveolar system, as well as to plan the subsequent restorative intervention. The tasks of the Olympiad included an assessment of the state of the temporomandibular joint, an assessment of the state of periodontal tissues using odonto-parodontogram and establishing diagnosis according to functional dissociation of the dentition (V.Yu. Kurlyandsky); an assessment of the occlusion of the teeth of patient, establishing dental diagnosis, proposing two different treatment plans (with and without dental implantation).
The Olympics began at 9.00. On the eve of the Olympiad, each participant was presented with the initial data. The teams had to fulfill the tasks for three hours. The participants had to send the answers to the organizers by e-mail before 12.00. The technical requirements for computers and laptops to complete the assignments were indicated in the invitation letter in advance.
A week before the start of the Olympiad the author and chief developer of Avantis 3D program, professor Alexander Ryakhovsky held a webinar for the participants to make sure that they are properly prepared for fulfilling the tasks using his software.
After summing up the results, the jury named the winners. The teams of the Omsk State Medical Universities and Perm State Medical University named after Academician E.A.Wagner were announced the top winners of the Olimpiad. Nevertheless, the jury emphasized that the team of the Belarusian State Medical University also demonstrated a good grounding in prosthetic dentistry. This is an honor for the BSMU team, considering that the general training period were less than a month.
As a virtual gift, participants and their leaders received an excellent digital study guide.
Congratulations to the contestants of the First All-Russian Online Student Olympiad in Digital Prosthetic Dentistry! The University leadership wishes you further victories in the professional sphere!
