The VIII Republican Student Olympiad in Human Anatomy with international participation was held on the basis of the Department of Human Anatomy of the Belarusian State Medical University. Conducting student Olympiads in such a complex academic discipline as “Human Anatomy” has already become a wonderful annual tradition, which is led by the head of the Department of Human Anatomy, professor N.А.Trushel.
The 2020 Student Olympiad in Human Anatomy was held on-line. It was attended by teams consisting of three students (2nd year) from all medical universities of the Republic of Belarus and six medical universities of Russian Federation (Moscow, St. Petersburg and Smolensk):1. Belarusian State Medical University;
In order to choose the students who will participate in the final stage of the Olympiad, the Department of Human Anatomy held a qualifying stage. It was attended by fifteen 2nd year students of the medical and pediatric faculties, who had an good and excellent grade point average according the results of the colloquia on human anatomy held during the academic semester.
Each participant was given different tests, tasks with illustrations, situational tasks, etc. All the participants had to show quick wits, inventiveness and the ability to think clinically. Also, students were given tasks on radiation anatomy (ultrasound images, CT and MRI scans, X-rays, video fragments of endoscopic operations). A lot of participants were able to give the correct anatomical justification of some types of medical manipulations. The assignments were rather difficult, but the students demonstrated deep and structured knowledge of the subject.
According to the results of the qualifying stage, three representatives of the Belarusian State Medical University were selected to participate in the final stage of the Olympiad: Valeria Pitsuk (2nd year student, Pediatric Faculty), Sergei Viktorovich Prihodko (2nd year student, Faculty of General Medicine), Matvey Terentyev (2nd year student, Pediatric Faculty).

The Olympiad included three stages. Only one representative from the team, who was selected in advance, participated in each stage. At the first stage, it was necessary fulfill the tasks on clinical anatomy (including such areas as anatomy in radiation diagnostics, anatomy in ophthalmology, anatomy in pediatrics and neonatology, anatomy of slices according to N.I.Pirogov, etc.).
Despite the unusual form of the event (online form) for the academic discipline “Human Anatomy”, students from all universities demonstrated deep knowledge, were able to apply it to solve clinical problems, and showed ingenuity in completing assignments. Moreover, students and teachers had the opportunity to learn more about the peculiarities of teaching anatomy at each medical university and the organization of students’ scientific circles, as well as communicate with colleagues in a friendly atmosphere.
At the second stage of the Olympiad, the participants received photographs of museum preparations. The task was to name the structures indicated by numbers. At the third stage, students were asked to address clinical situations and watch a video of surgical intervention. Then they had to name certain topographic formations. Participants sent all answers via google form to the organizing committee.
The participants of the Olympiad demonstrated excellent knowledges in Human Anatomy and proved that even in the on-line format, the Student Olympiad is still considered as an interesting and exciting educational event.
