On the initiative of the World Dental Federation (FDI), World Dental Health Day has been annually celebrated since 2008 on March 20. The aim of this event is to raise public awareness of the need to preserve and maintain dental health.
World Dental Health Day was introduced in 2007 and originally set for September 12, the birthday of FDI founder, Dr. Charles Gordon. However, the holiday was not widely celebrated until 2013, then it was agreed to change the date to March 20 as the World Dental Congress is held every year in September.
The date was changed as follows:
Numerically, this can be converted into 3/20 hence 20.03.
In 2016, the Republic of Belarus welcomed the celebration of Dental Health Day by adding a new date – March 20 – to the list of dental events.
This year’s slogan is simple but meaningful: “Be proud of your healthy smile!”
In many countries hundreds of events are held on this day, such as dental check-ups, educational lectures, check-ups in schools and flash mobs. For example, the day before, the staff of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of Belarusian State Medical University under the guidance of Professor Natalia Vyacheslavovna Shakovets, Doctor of Medicine, Head of the Department; and the 2nd Department of Therapeutic Dentistry – under the guidance of Professor Tatiana Manak, Doctor of Medicine – conducted educational events with students and patients. These were dental care education, motivation for healthy habits, hygiene lessons with schoolchildren, awareness-raising among students about the history of Dental Health Day and the mission of dentists in raising public awareness about dental diseases and the possibilities of preventing them.
The participants of these events reported that they received useful information, which they will definitely use to improve their own health.
