BSMU students underwent practical training on hygiene and epidemiology

Five 6th-year students of BSMU Faculty of Preventive Medicine underwent practical training at North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov from 2 to 15 August. However before that they were qualified by certain criteria - high academic performance, active participation in the social and scientific life of the university. The guys were given an excellent opportunity to exchange experience, gain useful skills, and listen to advice and recommendations from Russian specialists.

The rich program of practical training included activities aimed at familiarizing with the organization of St. Petersburg sanitary and epidemiological service, which is especially important during a difficult epidemiological situation. On the first day, students were given an excursion around the territory of North-Western State Medical University, which was formed in 2011 as a result of the merger of St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education and St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I.Mechnikov (St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I.Mechnikov). The guys visited the simulation center, on the basis of which classes of 5th and 6th year students and final assessment after state exams are held. Then the students visited the history museum of North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, the Military Medical Museum and the Museum of Hygiene of the City Prevention Center.

During the practical training, future doctors got acquainted with the history, faculty staff and structure of the Department of Epidemiology of the University, with the main directions of its development, scientific activity and international cooperation. At the department lectures were held on the topic “Tick-borne encephalitis and borreliosis. Epidemiological surveillance”, “Epidemiological Diagnostics”, during which cases of intestinal diseases outbreaks were considered, as well as issues of molecular epidemiology, in particular, improving methods for studying the human genome.

A lecture on the topic "Immunoprophylaxis" was also held and the epidemiological characteristics of healthcare-associated infections were considered. In the form of a discussion, measures were discussed to prevent the development of healthcare-associated infections in the departments of multidisciplinary inpatient healthcare institutions, for example, the organization of various departments’ activities at the tuberculosis dispensary.

The practical training program also included a visit to the North-West Scientific Center for Hygiene and Public Health. Here, students got acquainted with the directions of scientific and practical activities, the structure of the center, as well as the structure of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare. For them, an excursion to the department of occupational pathologies was conducted (during which new methods of studying occupational diseases of muscle tissues by the method of ultrasound diagnostics were considered), a lecture on the provision of drinking water to the population of St. Petersburg and the organization of sewerage.

The guys also visited the department for the complex hygienic assessment of physical factors, the department for the study of electromagnetic radiation, which are engaged in measuring the indicators of physical factors, analyzing the data obtained and developing regulatory documents in these areas.

At the same time the students got acquainted with the activities of the Department of Analysis, Assessment and Prognosis, the Department of Habitat and Public Health Research in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation (the federal programs "Pure Water" and "GeoPortal" were considered). After that the guys listened to a lecture "Methodology for assessing the risk to public health in the development of projects for sanitary protection zones of industrial enterprises." The knowledge gained will undoubtedly be applied by students in the future at their workplaces as specialists in the sanitary and epidemiology.

Despite the rich practical training program, the students of Belarusian State Medical University had the opportunity to learn a lot of interesting things about the cultural life and historical heritage of St. Petersburg, as well as gain experience in intercultural communication and find new friends.

The administration of Belarusian State Medical University expresses its gratitude to the rector of North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Sergei Saiganov, the staff of Department of International Activities and Projects represented by the head Ksenia Nagornaya, the faculty staff of the Russian university for organizing the practice of BSMU students at the proper level.
