Students from the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport have successfully completed their practical training

At the end of September, a final meeting was held with our Egyptian partners from the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport. The parties summed up the results of student practice and discussed ways of further cooperation. The students, in turn, shared their impressions of the educational practice at the country’s leading medical institution of higher education.

On the significant day, a videoconference was held with the Rector of the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Professor Ismail Abdel Gafar Ismail Farag. The videoconference was also joined by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the League of Arab States Sergey Terentyev.

Rector of Belarusian State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Sergey Rubnikovich cordially greeted his colleagues. The meeting was also attended by Vice-Rector for International Relations, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vasili Roudenok, Dean of the Dental Faculty, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Tatiana Shevela, Dean of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Nataliya Gurina, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Marina Petrova, Dean of Students Affairs of the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Associate Professor Mohamed Elshaib, as well as students of the Dental and Pharmaceutical Faculties of Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport who have successfully completed educational practice at BSMU.

The students' program was rich and diverse. It was replete with practical sessions and lectures, it was not without cultural and entertainment events, but first things first.

Students of the Dental Faculty began their acquaintance with the university with a meeting with the Dean of the Dental Faculty, Associate Professor Tatiana Shevela, and students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty - with a meeting with the Dean of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, Professor Natalia Gurina and her deputy Maria Volochnik. Our guests were given an introductory tour of the educational institution, told about the academic and scientific life within its walls.

The first practical sessions of future dentists were held at the Department of Human Morphology, in particular, seminars on the oral histology (teacher - Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Yulia Melnichenko) and topographic anatomy of tissue planes of the maxillofacial region (senior teacher Valentina Zatochnaya). The students visited the 1st and 3rd Departments of Therapeutic Dentistry, where they took classes "Modern methods of endodontic treatment" (teacher - associate professor of the 1st Department of Therapeutic Dentistry, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Ekaterina Kolb) and "Periodontology: clinic, diagnostics. Treatment planning" (teacher - professor of the 3rd Department of Therapeutic Dentistry, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yulia Denisova). Students have successfully mastered the material on modern approaches to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental diseases, then they practiced it.

The practitioners also visited the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, where they had classes “Impressions and models in fixed prosthodontics”, “Suture material. Types of sutures”, “Jaw Tumors”, “Salivary Gland Diseases” under the guidance of Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Vladimir Sharanda, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Irina Lenkova and Department Assistant Irina Boyarina. In these classes, students got acquainted with the etiology and treatment methods of various developmental anomalies, injuries and deformations of the chewing apparatus and other organs of the dentoalveolar system.

At the Department of Oral Surgery, a practical session “Difficulties in lower third molar extraction” was held (Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Ekaterina Maksimovich), at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, students were told and demonstrated the main preventive measures at children's dental appointment (Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Natalya Shakovets and Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Daria Naumovich).

During practical sessions, the students of the Dental Faculty demonstrated the ability to make quick decisions, showed the ability to think clinically, and also flawlessly performed all kinds of manipulations and interventions.

Our Egyptian guests were lucky enough to practice at the laboratory of practical training, which is equipped with the latest simulation equipment. So they had classes on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid for anaphylactic shock ( Assistant of the Department of Outpatient Therapy Vitaly Droshchenko).

Students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty spent their time no less productively: they attended lectures and seminars, took an active part in discussions. Their practice took place at the Departments of Bioorganic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Organization of Pharmacy, Medical and Biological Physics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology.

There were a lot of lectures on pharmacy, such as “Pharmaceutical Education in the Republic of Belarus” (lecturer - Professor Natalia Gurina), “Design of organic compounds in SAR-analyzes” (lecturer - Head of the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Olga  Rineyskaya), “The application of thermodynamic methods in drug design” (lecturer - Head of the Department of General Chemistry, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Vladislav Khrustalev), lectures “Introduction to Pharmaceutical Analysis. The Relationship Between Chemical Structure and Pharmacological Activity” and “Methods of analytical chemistry used in pharmacopoeial analysis. Identification of cations” (lecturer - Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Roman Lukashov). They also took a course of practical training in the sections “Botany”, “Pharmacognosy” and “Analytical chemistry”. Undoubtedly, our talented teachers, head of the Department of Organization of Pharmacy, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Olga Mushkina and Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Associate Professor Roman Lukashov shared their rich experience with future pharmacists.

It should be noted that students had the opportunity to visit a pharmacy and try on the role of practicing pharmacists. They got acquainted with the purpose of all premises of the pharmacy, the requirements for drug storage and staff work.

Pharmacy students visited the educational and experimental site of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, located in the village of Novoye Pole, since it is very important for a future pharmacist to know the world of medicinal plants, which are widely used in the drugs manufacture for the prevention/treatment of certain diseases. The students took a tour of the site, introduced them to the most used plants in medicine, described rather rare plant species in Belarus. The guys, in turn, demonstrated their own knowledge, having managed to identify some plants by their constituent parts.

Egyptian trainees also visited our university's anatomical museum, which includes several rooms. They were really fascinated by the variety of drugs.

...Nevertheless, the trainee students had time for a cultural and entertainment program. They went on an excursion to the museum complex of ancient crafts and technologies “Dudutki”, accompanied by Mohamed Elshaib, methodologists of the Department of International Relations - Anastasiya Karnacheva and Tatyana Malkovich.

Dudutki complex is called an island of originality, where the Belarusian flavor is in full swing: here you can taste dishes of the Belarusian national cuisine, learn about the secrets of blacksmithing, weaving, bee-keeping, pottery and, moreover, take part in interactive activities - forge a horseshoe yourself or make a vase ... Among the foreign guests there was one volunteer - a fragile, but, as it turned out, strong girl who helped the blacksmith forge a horseshoe, and, of course, received it as a gift.

The children had the opportunity to try homemade cheese with spices, herbal tea, after which they all went to the open-air mini-zoo: the students fed the animals, took photographs and enjoyed the warm autumn weather.

The excursion ended with a cart ride. And then Egyptian students walked around the complex and bought souvenirs for relatives and friends.

On the way to Minsk, they visited the famous windmill, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is notable for the fact that she served for more than seventy years. There the grain for the local bread is ground until now, which the students have been treated to.

…At a meeting with the rector of BSMU, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Sergey Rubnikovich, the students shared their impressions of the trip to Belarus, expressing their deep gratitude to the teachers, accompanying and, of course, the rectors of two universities, without whose assistance they would not have had the opportunity to visit Belarusian State Medical university and gain valuable experience for a future career.

Professor Rubnikovich also thanked the students for the fruitful work in the departments and kind feedback on the teaching staff of the educational institution.

Professor Ismail Abdel Gafar, in turn, expressed his gratitude to Belarusian State Medical University and stressed that this experience will form the basis for the further development of bilateral Belarusian-Egyptian cooperation.

Sergey Rubnikovich expressed confidence that this interaction will have a positive effect on both the academic and scientific life of both educational institutions.

It is important to note that this year Belarusian State Medical University will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Taking this opportunity, the rectors invited each other to take part in the solemn events.

At the end of the meeting, the rector of BSMU presented the students of the two faculties with certificates of educational introductory practice, wishing them professional success.
