On May 25-26, 2019 the 1st International Student Olympiad in Sports Medicine “Medical Marathon” was held at the First State Medical University named after I.M.Sechenov, Moscow (Russian Federation).
In 2018/2019 academic year the Belarusian State Medical University for introduced a pre-graduate internship in new area – Sports Medicine. The interns in Sports Medicine formed the team entitled “Olympus of Medicine”. The team members are Olga Borovskaya, Darya Zekova, Anna Dubovskaya, Ilya Petrovsky and Viktor Semak.
The program of the Olympiad consisted of several stages as any sports competition. The first stage was in the form of a quiz "Erudite" which consisted of 26 questions. The topics of a quiz were quite diverse and covered areas of knowledge in physiology, biochemistry, sports medicine, cardiology, surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, anti-doping legislation, the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
The team of the Belarusian State Medical University “Olympus of medicine” turned in a good performance in the following competitions “Video Assignment”, “Sport Medicine Doctor’s Bag”, “Functional Test of the Joints”, “Algorithm of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation”, “Anti-Doping”, “Practical Skills”. In accordance with the specialization in sports medicine each of the 5 team members took the role of a leader in making decisions and giving the right answer. For example, in the competitions “Video Assignment” the BSMU team “Olympus of medicine” was highly appreciated by the Chief Referee, MD, Professor of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of RUDN University A.V.Kovalev.
Olga Borovskaya, Darya Zekova, Anna Dubovskaya took the lead in the competition “Algorithm of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation”. As a result, all tasks were performed without rebuke. In the competition “Functional Test of the Joints” Ilya Petrovsky and Viktor Semak cast themselves in the role of a “think tank” and fulfill the task excellently.
Due to the unity and team spirit the “Olympus of medicine” won the following competitions:
“Practical Skills” (1st place);
“Video Assignment” (3rd place).
In the overall standings, the BSMU team “Olympus of medicine” achieved the 7th place out of 22 teams of medical universities of the Russian Federation, Uzbekistan and Belarus.
The organizers of the Olympiad did their best not only to hold such a remarkable International Competition in Sports Medicine, but also to make the whole stay of the students in Moscow memorable. The fascinating cultural program included visits to the Moscow Kremlin and Alexander Garden, Zaryadye Park. The students walked near the Moscow City Tower, climbed the Sparrow Hills to see the unforgettable panorama of Moscow.
The team “Olympus of medicine” expresses gratitude to the leadership of the Belarusian State Medical University. For the help provided the team also thanks the Department of Medical Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy, Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, Department of Military Health Maintenance Organization and Emergency Medicine, the Department of Physical Education and Sport and Center for practical training.
