At the BSMU Indian community initiative the Festival of Indian Culture or the Evening of Belarusian-Indian friendship, according to the rector’s Anatol V. Sikorsky opening speech, was held at the university.
It should be noted that the year 2018, the year of the Festival, has become an anniversary year: the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of India celebrate 25 years of establishing diplomatic relations between the countries. It is not by chance that our university has become a platform for holding such a large-scale republican event: 120 citizens of India study at the Belarusian State Medical University and university’s leadership actively supported the initiative to hold this wonderful holiday. The festival brought together fans of Indian culture from all over Belarus; Belarusian and foreign students, cadets from Minsk universities (Military Academy of Belarus, Belarusian State Economic University), students from Vitebsk and Gomel were present.
The guest of honor of the Festival - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Belarus, Ms. Sangeeta Bahadur, addressing the organizers and participants with a welcoming speech, did not hide the joy that so many people came to the event dedicated to Indian culture. Ms. Ambassador expressed solidarity with the university’s rector Anatol V. Sikorsky that the Festival of Indian Culture at the Belarusian State Medical University lays new traditions in the Belarusian-Indian friendship.
The university’s leadership, staff, teachers, students - all those present at the celebration - were moved from snow-covered Minsk to hospitable, warm India. The guests of the Festival enjoyed taste and aroma of national dishes, participated in a master class on painting with henna, and ladies even tried on national women's clothing - a sari.
The culmination of the event was a big concert. All those present were once again convinced that talented and creative personalities choose medicine as their future profession. Indian students sang, danced and played musical instruments.
In the presence of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Belarus, Ms. Sangeeta Bahadur, the best Indian students of Belarusian universities received awards and gratitude. Among the best - a student of the 2nd course of BSMU Medical faculty for foreign students Sumya Verma.
In the Indian spiritual tradition the principle of disinterested help is laid for those who need it. The Indian community of our university demonstrated loyalty to the spiritual foundations, making a valuable gift to a student from Nigeria, Moses Alabi. All his personal belongings were destroyed as a result of the fire. Moses and all those present in the hall were moved to tears by this act.
The rector of Belarusian State Medical University Anatol V. Sikorsky thanked all Indian students and co-organizer of the Festival Head of “Matey Abroad” and “Milemir” companies for this great friendship holiday and expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Sah Rama Shankar for active work in establishing international cooperation and organizing higher education for Indian citizens at the Belarusian State Medical University.
It should be noted that representatives of other communities, having visited the Festival of Indian Culture, got excited about the idea of presenting their countries at the same scale.
Indian students are grateful to the leadership of the university and personally to the rector Anatol V.Sikorsky, the Vice-rector for educational work Pavel V.Markautsan, the Vice-rector for international relations Vasili V. Rudenok, as well as the Dean of the Medical faculty for foreign students Oleg S. Ishutin for supporting the initiative. They express special gratitude for the assistance in the implementation of their plans to the student club and personally to the head of Tamara N. Filipovets who helped to realize bold creative ideas. The words of gratitude are addressed to the whole team of the Department of Belarusian and Russian languages department and personally to the head of the department Tatyana N. Melnikova.
