A decrease in patients with maxillofacial tumors of the head and neck is currently not observed. Experts from Europe and Asia has come to such a disappointing conclusion. This issue is given much attention throughout the world. Difficulties in solving the problem are determined by the complexity of treating tumors, its removal, as well as the difficulty in making removable or fixed aesthetic prostheses for patients with maxillofacial defects and deformities, problems of their rehabilitation.

Representatives of the dental community from 6 countries (Bulgaria, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Germany, Austria) participated in the 1st Eurasian Congress on Maxillofacial Prosthetics, which was held on November 16 and 17, 2018 in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). On behalf of the Belarusian State Medical University the Congress was visited by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Sergei N. Pakhamovich and Associate Professor at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery Alexander V. Glinnik.

In their reports the speakers highlighted and discussed issues related to the problems of increasing the number of patients with congenital and acquired pathology of the maxillofacial region, including diseases associated with the development of neoplastic processes, as well as traumatic injuries and conditions emerged following specialized drug therapy leading to the occurrence of defects and deformities. For example, in Kazakhstan in 2015-2017 the annual increase in new cases of oncological diseases is more than 700. The total need for maxillofacial prosthetics of postresection defects in the maxillofacial region of oncologic nature exceeds 35,000 people. Noteworthy figures for similar indicators were named by all representatives of the countries participating in the meeting.

Speakers identified the social aspects of the problem, one of which is the low degree of accessibility of complex postoperative treatment and rehabilitation, as well as its low efficiency in this category of patients which leads to a high degree of disability and dependency. It was also noted that with the proper level of qualified high-tech medical and psychological assistance, the return of patients to their professional activities and social life will be high, which will bring material resources to society and will help increase the social orientation of the state.

Following the results of the congress, participants adopted a resolution on the feasibility of establishing the Eurasian Association for Maxillofacial Prosthetics to join efforts in training specialists, conducting research, complex treatment and rehabilitation of patients with maxillofacial deformities, effective restoring the function of lost organs and tissues in the head and neck region with prosthetic structures.

The participants made unanimous decision to hold the second Eurasian Congress on maxillofacial prosthetics in Minsk.

The chief external specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus in dentistry Andrey M. Matveev and the Chairman of the Belarusian Dental Association Igor V. Tokarevich was informed about the possibility of implementing this project. During the discussion, the relevance and significance of improving the provision of special medical care to patients in the Republic of Belarus was noted.
